When a unit takes over from the lead and coordinates actions to carry out the lead’s plan, it preserves unity of effort by following the lead’s intent and assuming responsibility for execution. This means reading the commander’s concept, maintaining the same sequence and timing of actions, and synchronizing with other units to continue the mission without introducing a new approach. It keeps operations coherent, prevents gaps in coordination, and allows the plan to unfold smoothly even as leadership changes hands.

This differs from simply providing support, which would stop short of taking over the plan; it also wouldn’t involve continuing with the same lead’s plan. It also isn’t about disrupting the enemy or withdrawing from the area.
